Forsyth community members are joining together in a fundraising effort to help Forsyth area families affected by the loss of SNAP benefits during the federal government shutdown.
Efforts are being coordinated by Lonnie Brown of Shirley’s Kitchen, a popular Forsyth restaurant. Donations are being accepted at the restaurant, and several other area businesses have committed to contribute up to $500 each to match the donations received. In addition to Shirley’s Kitchen, businesses participating in the assistance effort so far include Save A Lot, DNR Remodeling, Rodney’s Up in Smoke, Kar Lot, Church 3:16, Hunt Excavating and Septic, Grace Church, Kim’s BBQ, Oak Grove Resort and the Branson Globe, along with several loyal Shirley’s customers and other individuals in the community.
“Not only does this help the affected families directly, but it helps other businesses,” said Brown. “People don’t always think about it, but at one of our local grocery stores, 37% of sales are people using their EBT card. That’s a big loss to the business if people can’t shop.” Other businesses may see effects as well; for example, a family may have to channel a limited income toward food rather than other expenses such as car maintenance.
In addition to the cash fundraiser, families can pick up a pound of meat, a pound of oats, and some buns by stopping by Shirley’s Kitchen with their child/children, between 4 and 5 p.m. each Tuesday and Thursday until benefits are reinstated. Last week, the restaurant was also able, with the help of the community, to donate over 60 gift certificates for families to use at the local Save-A-Lot grocery store.
Stop by Shirley’s Kitchen at 16039 U.S. Hwy. 160 in Forsyth to donate—and why not enjoy a delicious meal while you’re at it! Restaurant hours are 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily, as well as from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday evenings.
