It’s that time of year again in many Missouri counties, when real estate and personal property owners find their tax statements in the mail. In Taney County, senior citizens who applied and qualified for the senior real estate property tax freeze also found a renewal form enclosed with their statement.
The procedure for renewal can vary widely across Missouri counties. In Taney County, receiving the renewal form serves as a good reminder, although at least one recipient pointed out the potential for confusion as to whether supporting documentation needs to be included with the form. A call to the collector’s office indicated that the renewal form can be dropped off or mailed with tax payments, and the office staff can access supporting documents for the renewal, provided nothing has changed in the status. Possible changes could include substantial improvements or additions to the property, or the property no longer being the citizen’s primary residence, among other things. Taney County uses a renewal timeframe of June 30.
Stone County does not include renewal forms with tax statements at this time; a collector’s office staff member said the forms can be accessed online or picked up at the office. The window for renewal in Stone County is March 1 to May 31, 2026. Newly qualified residents can find information at the county websites or by calling the collector’s office.
Branson area resident Josh Smith, a key advocate for the adoption of the senior tax assessment freeze in Taney County, recently shared that some counties appear to be researching ways to make the process easier. Smith said he believes this would not only reduce possible confusion about the documentation question, but also save considerable staff time and paperwork. Per the Greene County website and a couple of others, renewal forms are not needed except for changes in qualification status; other counties are exploring a self-reporting reminder for changes or possibly a periodic audit rather than yearly paperwork.
Regardless of your county’s procedure, plan now to get the renewal taken care of and don’t miss out on this valuable senior benefit.
