Stars, stripes and world records: Branson’s Flag Day spectacle salutes America’s 250th

“America’s most patriotic city,” Branson, Missouri, is putting on a “record-setting” display of American pride for Flag Day on June 14 worthy of its name. Heather Hermen, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing & Communications Officer for the Branson CVB, said, “America’s 250th Anniversary is a once-in-a-lifetime thing, and we wanted to do it in grand style in one of the most patriotic spots in America.”

Widely known for its four key stones of “Faith, Family, Flag, and Fun,” the city is taking things to the next level by aiming for a Guinness World Record. Herman said that this is not just any record; it is an attempt to build a giant flag mosaic to honor America’s 250th anniversary and promises to be one of the most thrilling patriotic events of the summer, offering residents and visitors alike a truly unforgettable experience.

The exciting centerpiece of the day is the massive Guinness World Record attempt. Starting at 9 a.m., the local Convention and Visitors Bureau staff will begin assembling a colossal 1,400-square-foot template on the top floor of the Branson Convention Center parking garage. To break the record, about 500 custom-made flags will be carefully draped flat on the ground. These flags measure 5 feet by 3 feet and come in bright shades of Branson red, white and blue and are all manufactured in the United States.

The custom flags feature the iconic “B” from the Branson logo alongside a red star. To successfully set this strict world record, every single flag must lie flat and touch the others perfectly, with no gaps. No one is allowed to hold them physically. The bottom of the massive display will even feature a special 15-percent border strip with the words “Branson, Missouri” preprinted, clearly visible from the sky.

While the assembly of the mosaic starts early in the morning, the public is encouraged to arrive at 12 noon for the official judging. This is a thoughtful move to ensure that families do not have to stand around in the summer heat for hours. A land surveyor will be present to verify the 1,400-square-foot measurement, while a drone photographer captures incredible aerial video. An official Guinness World Record judge will also be on hand to confirm the amazing achievement. If the weather gets rainy or too windy, the city has a reliable backup plan to move the entire display indoors to the Convention Center. Parking in the garage will be free using a code that will be posted at the entrance.

After the record is set, The Flagstore in downtown that had the flags manufactured will sell them to the public at a discounted price of $20. This allows anyone to own a special piece of Branson history. The event organizers are not making any profit from flag sales; profits will go to local veterans’ organizations.

At 4 p.m., the city will host its first Flag Day Parade through Historic Downtown Branson following the normal parade route. In keeping with the patriotic spirit of the day, the streets will be draped in American flags as about 40 entries line up for the parade.

It will feature classic car clubs, fire trucks and the Shriners as well as a giant Coca-Cola semi-truck and the Sparky trolley wrapped in special America 250th designs. In a fun twist, Santa and Mrs. Claus will even make a summer appearance wearing patriotic outfits! Volunteers will be passing out custom red, white and blue flag stickers and small waving flags for children along the route.
