Branson Alderman Glenn Schulz recently attended the Accounting Academy, held in Kansas City.

The four-day course, presented by the Accounting Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA), was designed for CPAs, as well as accounting professionals who are tackling roles in government finance. The Accounting Academy, a nationally attended event, covered a wide variety of topics, including Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, preparing financial statements, fund accounting, measurement focus, the annual comprehensive financial report, the annual audit and more. Shulz and others in attendance heard lectures presented by experts in the accounting industry. The event was hands-on, with attendees analyzing financial reports and being quizzed on material covered in the Academy.
"I signed up for the course so that I would be better equipped as an alderman to critically read our Branson government financial reports, engage with our professional finance staff using the appropriate terminology and to be better prepared to work through complicated budget topics," Schulz, Alderman in Ward II, explained. "The depth and breadth of the course was very impressive. The lecturers were widely recognized industry experts, including the City Comptroller for Kansas City, as a guest lecturer, who brought a wealth of experience and real-world examples to the classroom. The four days of course work exceeded my expectations"
Schulz continued, "As a retired engineer, I can assure you that I am not a CPA. But it was an honor for me to be able to work through the course exercises with CPAs and other government accounting professionals."
