Reader’s Corner: There’s a new print journal in town

With so many publications focusing on their online/digital presence these days, imagine my delight when I opened my mail a few days ago and found something really special—the inaugural issue of the Ozarkian Hillcrofter: Journal of the Society of Ozarkian Hillcrofters. Regular readers of this column know I’m a huge fan—backed by research—of the multi-sensory value of holding and interacting with a print publication, and all the more if it’s a really enjoyable one! (As opposed to my property tax bill or yet another ad for gutter guards or hearing aids.)

Printed with excellent quality and detail by the print shop at the College of the Ozarks, Volume I, Issue 1, Fall 2025, opens with messages from Society President Hayden Head and Chairman Curtis Copeland. Quoting Head, “A paper journal may seem like an anachronism in our digital world, but in a very real sense, it’s in keeping with what the Hillcrofters do.” Both he and Copeland cite accomplishments by the group in keeping with the mission of preserving Ozarks history, including partnerships with other area museums, nonprofits, etc., to make some of those labor-intensive projects happen.

The inaugural issue also contains several excellent articles featuring individuals past and present who have helped keep that history alive; a beautiful poem about October in the Ozarks; some excellent photography; and articles highlighting Ozarks scenery and area attractions.

Learn more about the Society of Ozarkian Hillcrofters, including membership levels and upcoming projects, and get your own copy of this journal by visiting www.societyofozarkianhillcrofters.com. (Oh, and thanks for the reminder that I need to renew!)
