Despite the weather pummeling the area that morning, the Forsyth MC-JROTC and the Daughters of the American Revolution persevered. Led by Major (ret.) Matthew Wagner of the MC-JROTC, 30 flags were honorably and respectfully retired at a flag retirement ceremony on June 7 at GUMI Camp (gumicampusa.com) in Cedarcreek, MO. This ceremony was organized by the Taneycomo Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution. Fortunately, the storms quit “just in time.”

The group was led in the Pledge of Allegiance by Cadet Kady Vanvolkenburgh of Forsyth MC-JROTC, the invocation was offered by Chaplain of the DAR Chapter, Shirley Tolar. Tim Hadler, founder of GUMI Camp and 24-year Branson entertainer, led the group in singing the National Anthem. The flags were honorably placed on the fire, one at a time by the MC-JROTC, while patriotic music was played. When all flags were in the fire and burning, “Taps” was played and all stood at attention in respect. The ashes of the burned flags were then buried, per the U.S. Flag Code. The ongoing circle of our precious liberty, as symbolized by our nation’s flag, continues.
The Taneycomo Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, provided snacks for the group and a spaghetti lunch was generously provided by Angela Hadaller, Director of GUMI Camp, a “healing place” for Veterans.
