Area entertainers support P.O.W. Network with benefit concert

Several Branson area entertainers stepped up to support the valuable work done by the P.O.W. Network on behalf of veterans and POW/MIA families, with a benefit concert on Wednesday, August 26, at the Americana Theatre on 76 Country Blvd. in Branson. 

 

 

Rich and Anna Watson served as emcees in addition to contributing their vocal talents. Additional participating artists in the fun and inspirational evening included Chris Conant, Dan Wagner, Jonathan and Deanna Edwards, Doug Gabriel, Steve Sanders and Dave Hamner. A 50/50 raffle was also held, and generous area donors provided several items for a live auction. 

 

 

Another highlight of the evening was the opportunity to meet songwriter and Army veteran Mike Conley. His music video “This Band of Steel,” [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYlPDpC6jtw], a tribute to POW and MIA soldiers and the bracelets commemorating them, moved the audience to tears and renewed inspiration to support those families through the Network. 

 

 

The P.O.W. Network, under the direction of Chairman Mary Schantag, has worked tirelessly for over 36 years to tell the stories of those captured, released, or passed away, and to help the families of those whose remains have yet to come home or their exact fate is still uncertain. The Network also helps identify people who forge documents and stories to claim they are honorable military veterans, but who actually are not. Another much-appreciated service is that of helping families trace their military legacy and retrieve valuable records. 

 

 

This is the Network’s 30th year in Branson, being involved in much of the event planning and organization for Veterans Homecoming Week: 

  • Opening show featuring some of the best Branson area entertainers; 

  • POW/MIA Service of Remembrance; 

  • Free meals for veterans and their accompanying loved one; 

  • Coordinating entertainment and door prizes during several service era reunions; 

  • Hosting the Military Gala & Banquet; 

  • Partnering with Walmart for a closing show and luncheon. 

 

 

It’s not too late to get involved in volunteering or contributing financially to help make all this happen! As new veterans come each year, and others return bringing family and friends, costs are significant, but so worth it as the smiles and thank-yous show it’s making a difference in their lives.
