On June 30, Table Rock Lake American Legion Post #637 celebrated its 25-year anniversary with a ribbon cutting ceremony, joining the 250th anniversary of the United States—commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4th, 1776. Located at 2 Woodland Avenue in Kimberling City, not far from the beautiful Table Rock Lake, it is a highly veteran oriented organization operated under the guidance and direction of retired Air Force Commander Heather Lawson and her volunteer staff.
I met with Commander Lawson and her assistant, retired Navy First Class Petty Officer/Ship Serviceman Adjutant Kevin McClain, who stated the American Legion is the largest veteran oriented organization in the United States, second only to the (VFW) Veterans of Foreign Wars. The Legion’s mission is “To honor the service and sacrifice of all veterans by supporting one another, strengthening our community and upholding the values of patriotism and service.” The Legion is open to the public providing more than just a meeting place. “We offer a community, a welcoming space for veterans, families and neighbors to connect.” They have a veteran service officer on staff to readily provide veterans with guidance and assistance with veteran claims and available resources. Open seven days a week they are always there to serve both the community as well as the needs of all our local veterans.
Inspiring the next generation, the Legion supports several local schools through both donations and scholarships. In addition to this, they extend their outreach to other nonprofit organizations such as the Elks, Shriners, Lions Club and many others. They regularly sponsor fundraising events to support not only local veterans but also area youth and community programs. The American Legion Post #637 offers friendship and camaraderie, building bonds through shared services, support and friendship. Together they live by the motto: “Veterans strengthening America.”
Visiting this special day with the American Legion staff and members was truly a heartwarming and unforgettable experience for me. Again, remember it is always open and welcome to all!
