Reader’s Corner: Stay safe from scams in a changing world

These days, one can’t be too careful when navigating social media, email, or those dreaded spam/scam robo-calls. Although all people face safety risks that affect their well-being, older individuals may be particularly susceptible and at higher risks due to physical, mental, or learning changes related to aging.

Learn to navigate those risks and “Be Aware to Prepare,” by joining Sergeant J.J. Goulbourne of the Kimberling City Police Department to participate in the May 13 Learning On Wednesday session at Kimberling Area Library. Sgt. Goulbourne will present “Living Your Life Safely in a Changing World,” an informal discussion on personal safety, including safety at home or when traveling; risks in online/mail communications; and protection from scams resulting from increased use of artificial intelligence.

The popularity of AI has enabled scams to generate videos often found on social media, text messages and other communication platforms to trick people into making decisions that may affect their personal safety and financial health. Think it couldn’t happen to you? Many of the people who share their stories with watchdog platforms such as KY3’s “On Your Side” didn’t think it could happen to them, either, until it did.

J.J. will speak about different ways to foster your comfort and safety in an increasingly more complex world of technology and communication, so don’t miss this valuable information starting at 10:15 a.m. on Wednesday, May 13, in the Kimberling Area Library Community Room, 45 Kimberling Blvd. in Kimberling City. Attendance is FREE; coffee and light snacks are provided; and pre-registration is not required.
