Ozark Mountain Music expands Bluegrass Camp while showcasing youth bands at contest

When more than 100 young musicians filled every available spot at Ozark Mountain Music Association’s (OMMA) Bluegrass Camp last summer, organizers were faced with a clear reality: demand for learning traditional music is growing faster than available opportunities.

Rather than turning students away, OMMA—a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to preserving and passing on the traditional music of the Ozarks—made the decision to expand.

In 2026, OMMA will host two Bluegrass Camps in Branson, the first on June 9–13 and the newly added second session on June 16–20, to give even more young musicians access to high-quality instruction, ensemble experience and mentorship. The camps bring together students from across the region to learn individually and in small groups, form bands and participate in jam sessions and performances throughout the week.

That pipeline of young musicians finds a public stage at OMMA’s annual Youth in Bluegrass Contest in Branson, continuing the legacy started by KSMU Radio to highlight young musicians carrying tradition forward. This year’s contest is scheduled for May 23 and will feature 15 youth bands, competing and performing for live audiences and showcasing the depth of young talent emerging in bluegrass today.

Together, the camp and contest form a cycle: students learn, grow and then perform—strengthening both their abilities and the future of the genre. The events are also a wonderful opportunity for young people to enjoy fellowship over shared interests, forming lasting friendships and often bands that continue performing together.

As a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, OMMA relies on registrations, ticket sales and community support to sustain its programming. The addition of a second camp reflects strong demand while building toward long-term sustainability, and proceeds from the Youth in Bluegrass Contest are used to help ensure the event continues annually.
