Summer is fast approaching and with it comes an exciting opportunity, offered by the Library Center of the Ozarks. The Library's Summer Reading Challenge, with the theme of "Unearth a Story," begins on June 1.
All ages are encouraged to participate in the Library Center of the Ozarks' Summer Reading Challenge, with categories designed for babies (0 to 5), children (ages 6 to 12), teens (13 to 17) and adults (18 and above). The two-month reading celebration will feature many activities primarily to enhance the reading experience, and offers awards and prizes as reading goals are met.
"We are very excited about the 'Unearth a Story' theme," explained Lia Hitz, Children Services Supervisor at the Library Center of the Ozarks. "Everything is dinosaurs, excavations and archeology. So, expect programs such as a dinosaur egg dig, dino magnets, fossil impressions and others. We didn't forget about America's semi quincentennial birthday, with adults and children’s crafts."
A variety of performers will visit the library during the Summer Reading event, adding to the excitement. Scheduled performers include Marty the Magician, Mad Science of Greater KC, members of the Taneycomo Festival Orchestra, animal ambassadors from Dickerson Park Zoo and others.
Hitz shared her thoughts on the importance of the program, noting, "The Summer Reading Challenge is an essential way to prevent learning loss, fostering a love of reading and enhancing literacy skills, especially among children. We know that reading comprehension is a skill that can decline if not routinely practiced, so we offer an interactive and award-based way to get everyone engaged. In addition to preventing learning loss and building literacy skills, there are so many prizes. Those that complete the Summer Reading Challenge by logging in the appropriate number of hours read receive a free book and a raffle ticket toward one of the major prize packs. These include splash pads, LEGO sets, headphones, gift cards, pottery kits and more."
Everyone is welcome to participate in the Summer Reading Challenge, including those who live outside of the Library District.
"Anybody can sign up online by visiting LCOzarks.com or by picking up a physical reading log in the library," explained Hitz. "Online registration begins Monday, May 18, and the physical reading logs are available on Monday, June 1."
"Don't let those reading comprehension skills go extinct – participate in the 'Unearth the Story' Summer Reading Challenge at the Library Center of the Ozarks," said Hitz. "There will be prizes, crafts and performers for everyone."
The library also encourages anyone living in the Library District, which encompasses the Branson and Hollister School Districts, to register for a library card – free of charge. The library card allows you and your family to have access to all of the services the Library Center of the Ozarks has to offer, during the summer months and beyond,
