On Thursday evening, April 9, the KY3 Weather School visited Forsyth High School for its last stop of the spring Weather Tour season. As the students, staff, families and community members arrived at the high school gymnasium, they were able to meet members of the KY3 television news and weather teams as well as local first responders and safety professionals, and receive valuable safety information.
Chief Meteorologist Ron Hearst kicked off the official start for the evening with an informative video presentation about how to recognize and identify different types of storm clouds; some of the frequent movement patterns of storms in the lakes, hills and trees of the Ozarks; and when to seek shelter, as well as what rooms are safest in various buildings.
Hearst was then joined by other members of the news and weather teams for some weather school experiments, ranging from wacky to fiery, each teaching an aspect of the physical science involved in storms and weather patterns. When an experiment didn’t go exactly as planned, or took more than one attempt, the team was adept at turning those moments into additional teaching opportunities about weather.
It was exciting to see the students interact with the KY3 team, some students asking great questions. As the evening wrapped up, it was apparent some were inspired to think about possible further study in meteorology or other fields of science.
Thanks to KY3 for making these informative and interactive evenings available to students across the Ozarks! Watch the KY3 First Alert Facebook page for announcements when the next season’s Weather Tour schedule is released, and plan to attend one of these fun and educational events!
