Mother’s Day is a time to celebrate the amazing women who have played such a big role in our lives. How big a role? Well, think about it: life as we know it couldn’t exist without Mothers. But it’s more than just bringing us into the world. Mothers have a big impact on who we become. As Abraham Lincoln did, many people feel they owe everything they are or hope to be to their “angel Mother.”
Some believe that the basic path of a person’s future forms very early on, and Mothers are the key people who shape that path. When God was making his plan for the universe and how humans would come into it, He had lots of options. He could have sent angels to bring babies down. Instead, He chose “earthly angels,” Mothers, to be trusted with this task.
The birth of Jesus shows the depth of this trust. God could have sent His Son to Earth carried by thousands of angels, etc. But He chose for Jesus to be born through an earthly Mother, Mary.
What a powerful message! God trusted His entire plan for saving humanity and the world’s Savior to a mother. The word “Mother” brings to mind a special love—a deep, selfless one that lasts from before birth to after death.
Rudyard Kipling said, “God could not be everywhere, and therefore he made Mothers.” God is love; Mothers extend that love here on Earth, offering a comfort that feels always present, even when you can’t see them.
In a purely earthly sense, Washington Irving said, “A mother is the truest friend we have when trials heavy and sudden fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends desert us; when trouble thickens around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts.”
Moms are the builders of who kids become and often seem like superheroes to their kids. They have incredible strength and bounce back from every difficulty, handling tough jobs, sometimes crying when they’re happy or laughing, even when heartbroken, but always caring. Mothers offer comfort when we’re upset and cheer us on when we succeed.
There’s no single right way to be a mom, and everyone’s journey as a mother is different. Whether you’re celebrating your mom, a grandmother, or any woman who has been like a mother to you, it’s really important to let them know how much they mean to you.
This Mother’s Day, or any day, make sure they know you love and appreciate them. Don’t wait until next year! Let’s take the time to honor these amazing “earthly angels” who bring us into the world, care for us, and guide us with a love that reflects God’s love, Mothers, His earthly angels.
