Branson PD gives reminder to be cautious when traffic lights are out

With the recent power outages that Branson has experienced, many have found themselves frustrated when approaching stop lights, which were not working.

The Branson Police Department reminds area residents and visitors that, in the event a traffic signal is not working or flashing red, the intersection is to be treated as a four-way stop sign. The Branson Police Department works quickly to get to the area's major intersections to direct traffic, but if you reach a traffic light that is not working, and the Branson Police Department has not yet arrived to direct traffic, there are some common rules to use.

Approach the intersection slowly and carefully, keeping an eye out for pedestrians and other vehicles. All vehicles must come to a complete stop. If no one is on site to direct traffic, the first vehicle arriving at the intersection has the right of way. but should always yield to any vehicles already in the intersection. In the event that two or more vehicles arrive at the same time, drivers should yield to the driver to their right.

When two vehicles across from each other approach the intersection, and one is turning, the driver going straight through the intersection should proceed first, followed by the vehicle that is turning.

If two vehicles across from each other approach the stop light, with one vehicle turning right and the other turning left, the vehicle turning right should go first.

The Branson Police Department reminds you in a situation where the traffic light is not working, or is flashing red, please stay alert and be patient to avoid collisions and accidents.
