101st Airborne lays wreath at Veterans Memorial Garden

The Branson Veterans Memorial Garden, located at the intersection of W. Main St. and Roark Valley Rd., is not only a wonderful place to remember and honor those who have fought to protect our freedom, but it is also an opportunity for veterans visiting the area to honor other veterans. 

Recently, a reunion group from the Charlie Company, 2nd/502, 101st Airborne stopped by the Garden to present a beautiful wreath and hold a dedication/remembrance ceremony. The group meets in Branson during the week before Mother’s Day each year, with seven members and several spouses able to attend this year; some gatherings have had 20 or more in attendance. 

Such reunions, along with the warm reception shown to veterans at many Branson area businesses and attractions, are a valuable connection point for fellowship and understanding, particularly among Vietnam-era veterans who did not always receive such a welcome upon returning home from their service. 

“We love the way the town treats veterans,” shared Larry Kuss, a North Dakota veteran who helps coordinate the reunions and attends regularly along with his wife, Terri. Kuss said they really appreciate the Memorial Garden, and leaving a commemorative wreath to honor fellow veterans has become a tradition for their group.  

“We were so honored to have these heroes visit, some of the first young men on the ground in Vietnam,” said Garden director Jana Evans. “These are the things that make us so happy here at the Garden, as groups of veterans show up to honor their own comrades.”
