Reader’s Corner: There’s still time to read for edible rewards

Any young adults out there have great memories of reading for free food as a youngster? I know my kids do; those trips to redeem Book-It coupons helped liven up errand days, and also inspired my less enthusiastic reader to keep up with his sister! (Don’t worry; he loves to read now!) Those promotional programs are still a thing, and it’s not too late to keep earning this summer! 

Both Kimberling Area Library and Library Center of the Ozarks are participating in the Happy McReaders program, a partnership with McDonald’s in which kids can read for Happy Meals. Even as summer break winds down, with band and sports camps in full swing and teachers actively prepping, the opportunity is open through August 31. Happy McReaders punch cards are available at the libraries, and a punch is earned for each book a child reads. After 10 books, the card can be taken to McDonald’s in Branson or Branson West for a free Happy Meal.  

Also continuing through August 31 is Pizza Hut’s BOOK IT! Summer of Stories. Parents can set reading goals tailored to their child’s needs and abilities, and any child who meets those goals can earn a free single-topping Personal Pan Pizza from participating locations.
