Reader’s Corner: New children’s book honors Crisco the Goat
As the Table Rock Lake community remembers Crisco the Goat, one author/artist offers a wonderful way to honor and share the legacy of the goat that has helped many families over the years turn a lake outing into a special treasure hunt.
Artist and author Matt Starr stopped by the Cricket Creek Marina on Saturday morning, September 5, to give Crisco fans a preview of his new children’s book, “The Adventures of Crisco the Goat: A Table Rock Lake Legend.”
Starr, who has often visited Crisco’s bluff and followed other people’s stories and photos, said he has been working on the book and new acrylic paintings since January, taking about eight months to complete the project, not knowing when he began that it would turn into a memorial project as well. The book provides fun, adventurous answers to questions a child might have such as where was Crisco born, who took care of him, how did he get his name, did he have friends and more.
The painting eventually chosen for the book’s cover introduces one of those friends, but that painting isn’t the only one; Starr’s talent for capturing fantasy and adventure for children to enjoy is evident in the other paintings that illustrate the book—like, how about a visit with Crisco’s friend “Vinny van Goat” under the stars over Table Rock Lake!
