A young band from Galena is making its mark on the regional music scene after traveling several hours to compete in the Rock the Heartland music competition.

Formerly known as The Greenhoods, the group is now performing under the name Tension. The high school musicians are bringing their own sound to the competition, blending folk and folk rock with original music written and performed by the members.

Based in Galena, Tension offered something different to this year’s Rock the Heartland lineup. While the competition celebrates rock music, organizers emphasized that the event is also about showcasing young musicians across a variety of genres.

“Tension brings something a little different to this year's lineup with their blend of folk and folk rock,” organizers shared in an artist spotlight announcing the group’s participation. The band’s musical style combines the storytelling elements of folk music with the energy of folk rock. As a group of young singer-songwriters, Tension is also focused on performing original material, giving the band an opportunity to share music that reflects its own creativity and developing identity.

For the members of Tension, competing at Rock the Heartland meant more than simply stepping onto a stage. The group made the five-hour drive to take part in the competition, putting its music alongside other young bands and musicians from across the region. After the performance, the band received praise for the way its members have continued to grow both musically and personally.

“Proud of these boys! They hopped in a car, drove five hours to compete against a bunch of other bands, and absolutely ROCKED the Heartland!” the band’s supporters shared following the competition. “They have grown immensely as musicians and as young men over the past couple years.” That growth has helped Tension continue building its presence beyond its hometown of Galena. The group is already preparing for another opportunity to showcase its music, with an upcoming appearance on KOLR10 Unscripted AM. Details about the television appearance are expected to be announced soon.

The band is also looking toward future opportunities to perform. With a growing collection of original songs and experience on the stage, Tension is hoping to connect with festivals, venues and other events looking for young musicians. The group’s supporters are encouraging event organizers and venue owners who believe a high school band of original singer-songwriters would be a good fit for an opening act, festival or venue to reach out.

From Galena to stages several hours away, Tension is demonstrating that young musicians from small communities can make a big sound. With continued growth, new opportunities on the horizon and plenty of original music to share, the band is just getting started.
