What I have seen or heard without fail is that the caregiver ends up “succumbing” (by losing their health, quality of life or life) long before the care recipient.

Pet longevity: The ‘last leg’ may not have to be
This can be very hard on us and we are expected to just “suck it up,” and hear the general consensus of “They are just animals…” This saying, more often, should be changed to… “They are just humans, what can you expect?”
