Tri-Lakes Humane Society prioritizes black cat safety during October

As Halloween approaches, black cats often become the focus of seasonal decorations, spooky traditions and superstitions. However, for some animal shelters, October also brings additional concerns about the safety of animals awaiting adoption.

Some shelters choose to temporarily pause black cat adoptions during the Halloween season to protect the animals from potential harm. While the policy may disappoint families hoping to welcome a black feline into their homes, shelters say the decision is rooted in concern for the animals' well-being.

The Tri-Lakes Humane Society is among those taking extra precautions during this time of year. The organization explained that its policy comes from firsthand experience with the dangers black cats can face during the Halloween season.

"Our shelter has personally been a victim of ritualistic harm to a black kitten during the Halloween season. As a result, we choose to protect our kitties above all else." The shelter shared.

Although most people seeking to adopt a black cat have good intentions, shelters must consider the potential risks when making adoption decisions. Temporarily delaying adoptions allows organizations to prioritize animal safety during a season when black cats may be targeted because of Halloween-related myths and harmful practices.

The Tri-Lakes Humane Society acknowledged that its policy may cause inconvenience for prospective adopters but emphasized that protecting its animals remains the priority.

"We do apologize for the inconvenience of this policy but it is from a true place of love and respect of the lives of our animals," the organization stated.

For those hoping to adopt a black cat, the temporary wait can be an opportunity to prepare for a new companion and learn more about responsible pet ownership. Interested adopters can contact their local shelter to ask about its specific policies and when adoptions may resume.

Black cats deserve the same love, safety and opportunity for a forever home as every other animal. This October, shelters encourage the community to help keep them safe and remember that every animal's life matters, regardless of its color.
