Everyone had a good time in spite of 90-plus degree weather at the third annual J-1 seasonal workers’ event, Wednesday, August 12. Some students enjoyed themselves playing volleyball, soccer, the dunking booth and cooling off in the creek by the Stockstill Park. Dinner was provided by local sponsors.

From 4 -8 p.m., J-1 college exchange students from 20 countries enjoyed outdoor activities. I spoke with Breana Hutchinson, residence director of International Residence Hall, as well as Silver Dollar City and Big Cedar. Breana stated "they bring a lot of help to local businesses. We have H-2Bs and J-1s who are here for experience for three to 12 months, between ages 18-21." There were also other local sponsors who supported this event.

I had an opportunity to speak with a J-1 seasonal worker at the Golden Corral Restaurant, while I was having a meal. Tony said he is from Romania. He said "this job gives me a chance to visit America. I will be here for two months. I have a scooter, and today, I have to work a double shift and cannot go to the event because I need to make lots of money." I spoke with two young men from Columbia and one from Turkey. I also spoke with two girls from Korea.

Jonas Tavares, director of the Workforce Development said "over 200 exchange students attended and this is the third year the event is held." He introduced me to one exchange student that has worked in Branson three times. Jonas said this is the last time he will come and work because he is graduating from college. I spoke with Cornelius who is "from the Republic of Moldova next to Ukraine,” he said. Cornelius was excited to go play futbol/soccer in five minutes when we spoke. The first thing he said was "Thanks you guys for this event. And, this is my third time here. I would like to live here. Because it is peaceful in Branson. I have a house and a good job." As he ran back to the game, he gave a thumbs up and said "God bless America."
