The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) announced the statewide expansion of its Sponsor-A-Highway program, an initiative aimed at fostering cleaner and safer roadsides through public-private partnerships.
The program, which was previously limited in scope, is now available to businesses, organizations, community groups and individuals across the entire state. The expansion seeks to address growing concerns regarding litter accumulation on Missouri’s thoroughfares while providing a streamlined maintenance solution for participants.
Professional maintenance, public recognition
Under the program’s framework, sponsors adopt one-mile sections of highway. Rather than performing the labor themselves, sponsors fund a MoDOT-certified service provider to handle professional litter removal and related roadside maintenance on their behalf.
In exchange for their contribution to state infrastructure, each sponsored stretch of highway features a prominent sign displaying the sponsor’s name and logo. This offers a unique opportunity for local businesses and community organizations to demonstrate their commitment to environmental stewardship while gaining regional visibility.
Focus on safety
By outsourcing the cleanup to professional crews, the program ensures that debris is removed efficiently without requiring volunteers to navigate high-traffic areas themselves. MoDOT officials emphasize that keeping roadsides clean is a vital component of traveler safety and state pride.
Individuals or organizations interested in participating are encouraged to sponsor a highway today to help keep Missouri roadsides cleaner and safer for everyone.
