Historical society expands Scroll of Honor for veterans

The Stone County Historical/Genealogical Society (SCHGS) is gathering together a memorial to honor all veterans from the county.

SCHGS President Ron White said the society board has been working on expanding their Scroll of Honor.

“The Scroll of Honor is our way to recognize and honor the veterans, from all military branches, within Stone County,” White said. “We are asking for the community's help to gather names and stories of our veterans. We want the Scroll of Honor to include veterans from any war.”

White said the SCHGS has bigger plans this year to display the scroll. 

“We are wanting to be able to display the scroll on a traveling display throughout our county,” White said. “We are hoping to add to our list of veterans to add to the scroll before the end of September, so we can have it ready to be on display for Veterans Day and the month of November.”

The SCHGS is asking for any veteran or the family within Stone County to reach out so their names can be added. 

“We have a form for each veteran, and there is a $5 cost to have them added to the scroll,” White said. “That takes care of the cost to have things reproduced for the scroll. The form helps us gather as much information as we can about each veteran.”

The Scroll of Honor is not just about preserving the military history of Stone County residents, White said, it is about showing gratitude for those who sacrificed for the future.

“We want to honor these folks,” said White. “Whether the veteran served in a war or never saw battle, we want to include them all. They all helped protect our freedoms. All veterans are welcome to be placed on the scroll.”
