Developmental Connections celebrate 45 years of service

Developmental Connections, Taney County’s governing board for individuals with developmental disabilities, is celebrating 45 years of service. Adhering to guidelines set forth in Missouri Senate Bill 40, the Taney County Commission established a dedicated property tax in 1980 to help fund services for county residents with disabilities.

The tax was approved by voters in November of that year, and the Commission appointed Developmental Connections’ first SB40 Board of Directors the following April. “Forty-five years is a definitive milestone for the organization’s growth and commitment,” says Executive Director Troy W. Rasmussen. “Developmental Connections has set and maintained a high standard of service since its inception.”

Primarily funded through Taney County property tax, Medicaid and grants, Developmental Connections is privileged to have the support of the county and its residents. “We sincerely appreciate the numerous businesses and community members who have joined us in our mission to positively affect the lives of the individuals we serve,” says Rasmussen.

Tantone Industries: Developmental Connections has a rich history of providing much-needed services to individuals with developmental disabilities. Tantone Industries opened in 1979, providing a supported work environment for individuals with developmental disabilities. Employees manufacture and assemble numerous products, including fire starters, trophies and floating eye wear, and assist with recycling and shredding for the community. The workshop also provides laundry service, cleaning service and is possibly best known for its thrift store, open to the public six days a week.

Dorgan-Weaver Apartments: In 2007, Developmental Connections partnered with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to provide residential living for individuals with disabilities. The 15 ADA apartments at Dorgan-Weaver are designed to support independence.

Creative Day Services: Developmental Connections’ day program opened in 2013. Services include cognitive and social development for individuals with developmental disabilities, along with educational activities, arts and crafts, fine motor skills and music therapy. Meals and snacks are served daily. Creative Day has a Retirement program for seniors and a Life Skills program, where individuals with disabilities improve independent living skills and community engagement.

Combs-Redfern Apartments: In 2014, Developmental Connections again partnered with HUD in opening a second apartment complex. The 14 Combs-Redfern Apartments are staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week and are designed for individuals requiring additional care. Direct support professionals assist with medications, meal prep, shopping, daily tasks, and community outings.

Saints Street Apartments: Two years later, in 2016, Developmental Connections partnered with the Missouri Housing Development Commission (MHDC) to build 24 additional apartments for individuals with greater independence.

Event Center: Developmental Connections opened a spacious event center earlier this year, offering meeting space to area residents and businesses at an affordable price. Housed at Ingrum Hall, the event center features a 2,100-square-foot banquet room, conference room and full kitchen. Ingrum Hall is also used for office space and as an employee training center.

“I’m proud of the fiscal responsibility the Developmental Connections team has shown,” says Board Member Dave Janke, “and am so grateful it has allowed us to make services available to residents in Branson and surrounding communities. We look forward to serving even more individuals with developmental disabilities in the future!”
